Voina's Cock Wins

From interrupting courtrooms to drawing huge phallus on a bridge in Moscow, Voina has brought critical art to a whole new level. And it hasn't gone unappreciated.

Before there was Free Revok, there was Free Voina, the movement to free members of the Russian artist activist group, who were jailed in November 2010.  In an interesting turn of events, Russia's Ministry of Culture nominated the group for a contemporary art award in February 2011, which they subsequently won in April.  Unsurprisingly, the group, known for protesting on large scales (ex: storming court rooms and performing lynchings in suburban supermarkets), protested the nomination.

The NYTimes Reported that the group's Punk Concert in a Courtroom influenced the board of judges, one (an activist artist himself) being the defendant on trial during the concert.  Voina appeared to perform "All Cops are Bastards".

The group of artists are standing to serve up to 7 years in prison on charges of hoolaganism, when they overturned police cars to protest government corruption in St. Petersburg.  To learn more visit:  Free Voina.
