Working on wood pieces at school is something you mentioned enjoying. Are you planning on honing your wood working skills and incorporating them into your street art?
I really am not very good at working with wood. I just know all of the techniques. While I would love to finally fulfill my drive to make sculpture, my hands are simply too heavy and patience to short at the moment. One day time and rhythm permitting.
Do you plan on doing more oil pieces like that big?
Absolutely, but for now the work is going to take a different direction in process but not necessarily be reduced in scale.
How important has flickr been to you and is now?
Flickr has always been a primary aspect of my working practice. It keeps me abreast to what other artists are up to throughout the world, and when I leave a city, the site functions as an omnipresent set of eyes as other photographers document my work in its various states of decay. Additionally, it becomes a platform for sharing process with others and sharing ideas.
Why do people think Gaia is a female?
Because I am.
Does Gaia have any daily routines?
Usually wake up at nine to the wonders of the Internet, do the necessary posting and see what’s going on in the world. After eating its just grind mode until the moment that I go to bed. Every day is just working on a new project.
What’s your motivation to go out and put up new work?
Keeping the presence alive. Maintaining spots. Exploring new streets and new cuts. Researching into specific locations and the history of certain places.
What’s coming up for Gaia? Any trips or shows?
A whole bunch of shit. A big show for graduation in Baltimore, collaboration with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Commission, short stint in Detroit, some stuff in New York, then late summer road tripping down to Atlanta, and finally traveling throughout Europe.
