California artists descend on Oakland for a live graffiti battle. Pictures and video inside.

 

The Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle, now in its 4th edition, took place at the beginning of October in Oakland. Twenty California-based graffiti artists participated in a live painting battle, all of them tasked with the duty of painting the same word: HEAL.

Going into the battle, Vogue TDK was the 2009 defending champion, competing against Katch, Vyal One, Ezra, Kier, King 157, Dime, Siloette, Prime 808, Lango, Wand, Jher and more. Vyal One took first place this year, crafting his letters from feathers and a bird's beak, making reference to the Gulf oil spill, as the bottom left reads, "Oil Spills, Blood Spills, Time to Heal."

From the organizers, It is the first battle of its kind, and features some of the nation's top graffiti artists in a nationwide urban art competition that honors and advances creativity in the Hip Hop arts. [The] video features highlights from the battle and includes the final canvas' from all of the competing artists!
